Ribbon cutting participants are, from left: Mark Osmundson, Chamber Ambassador; Dr. Chris Duree, IVCCD Chancellor; Yvonne Mallory, IVCCD Board Chair; Yelitza Patricio, MCC Student Senator; Carol Geil, MCC Foundation Director; Adiu Arou, MCC Student Senator; Dr. Robin Lilienthal, MCC Provost; Gary Schaudt, MCC Foundation Board President; and Chris Brees, MCC Director of Student Engagement & Residence Life.
Marshalltown Community College’s newly-remodeled William “Bill” Faust Student Union was christened in style with a program and ribbon cutting ceremony Sept. 22.
MCC Provost Dr. Robin Lilienthal welcomed participants and talked about the purpose of the student union space and its impact on student engagement and satisfaction. MCC Foundation Director Carol Geil shared information about benefactor William “Bill” Faust, who had many fond memories of his education at MCC, professors who made an impact on him, and friends he made there. His gift of $1 million for the union renovation was the largest single donation ever received by MCC, and it came much sooner than anyone anticipated when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2013. Geil said Faust’s sight was impacted by the tumor, but his vision for MCC remained strong and will serve as an inspiration to many current and future students and staff.
MCC sophomore and Student Senate Treasurer Yelitza Patricio, an accounting major, spoke on behalf of the student body. She thanked Faust and the college for the new space and talked about how it will be used and appreciated by students for years to come.
The Marshalltown Chamber Ambassadors assisted with the ribbon cutting ceremony.
