Shane Harris Exhibit in MCC Ray Frederick Gallery begins March 2

Shane Harris stands with some examples of what you may see at his art exhibit on March 2 – April 1.
Illinois native, Shane Harris, is the next featured artist at the newest exhibit in the Ray Frederick Gallery, room 306, on the Marshalltown Community College campus. The exhibit opens with a reception at 12:15-1:30 pm, Wednesday, March 2, and will be on display through noon Friday, April 1. MCC’s second exhibit of the New Year will feature Shane’s ceramic sculpture work.
“This show, titled ‘Eye Candy’, is an exhibit of small scale sculptural pieces—often displayed in dyads—with a connection between the two objects created by the space in between,” says Harris. “This space is often full of energy, tension, intimacy, and emotion as it is with people and relationships. My work is a depiction of those moments.”
Harris says there is also an element of humor and playfulness in his work, and he hopes the viewer can see that and connect with it in some way. “For me, art is about evoking emotion and curiosity.”
Harris was born in DeKalb, IL, about an hour west of Chicago. After high school, he went on to Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove, IL to study business. “It was at Waubonsee, that I took my first ceramics class and fell in love with the material,” says Harris. “At first, my focus was functional pottery. I began to branch out to sculptural work and also discovered a love for working with mixed media and found objects.” After Waubonsee, Harris transferred to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to earn his BFA in Ceramics.
“What makes my work unique is the impact of expressing dynamic and intense interactions with such small scale objects,” adds Harris. “In this show I use a unique combination of colorful glazes which draw the viewer in as suggested by the title of the show, Eye Candy”.
The Ray Frederick Gallery is open weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm. Visitors are reminded that the Ray Frederick Gallery will be closed from Monday, March 14 through Friday, March 18, for spring break.
