MARSHALLTOWN – Members of the Marshalltown Community College Honors Program made presentations during the MCC Honors Symposium held earlier this month on the MCC campus.
After a brief introduction from MCC Honors Program Coordinator & Student Advisor Dr. Danielle Kness, six Honors students presented on a variety of subjects:
- Emily Vest of Marshalltown presented Dancing Gummy Worms and Criminal Justice Reform Programs.
- JooYoung Ha of South Korea presented Comparison of Ancient Greek & Chinese Philosophers.
- Danica Wilson of Newton presented Sex TED Talks and Pegot’s Theory of Cognitive Development.
- Tiffany Thomas of Easton, Maryland, presented Creative Writing; Environmental Effects on Open Air Burning.
- Taylor Brown of Melbourne presented Ecology of Screech Owls.
- Ryota Masuko of Japan presented Nutrient Cycling in Aquaponics.
Those interested in being part of the MCC Honors Program must hold a 3.3 GPA and maintain that GPA throughout their involvement in the program. They must also apply to be part of the group. MCC Honors students are required to do three projects as well as take three seminar classes. When students are choosing their project(s), they select a topic that interests them and meet with their advisor and the instructor of the appropriate class. Honors projects involve an additional 20% more work above and beyond what’s required for the class.
Vest will be graduating this semester with full honors. Brown will also be graduating in May, and Masuko will be transferring at the end of spring semester. Ha, Wilson and Thomas will be continuing their education at MCC next fall.
The Shaping Minds/Shaping Lives award was presented to Brian Agnitsch for his work with Emily Vest on numerous Criminal Justice Projects.
