Marshalltown High School senior Adan Rodriguez is the recipient of a $500 Elevate Advanced Manufacturing scholarship. Rodriguez was enrolled this spring in classes at Marshalltown Community College, and he plans to apply the scholarship to complete a Welding diploma at MCC beginning this fall.

On his scholarship application, Rodriguez said he enrolled in a high school welding class with no particular interest in that as a career field, but by the time he got through the book and into the welding lab he “knew he loved welding.”

“I enjoyed it because as we worked through the book, I learned many things that I was able to do when I was in the welding shop … it all helped me,” wrote Rodriguez. “I originally planned to study for a career in Computer-Aided Design, but I soon figured out that Welding was for me. It was difficult at first, but now I love the idea of a Welding career. I have a part-time job and right now I’m waiting on acceptance for a summer internship in manufacturing, but I really needed this financial help for college. I am determined to do my best in the Welding program this August at MCC.”

Rodriguez will be one of 13 Elevate Scholarship winners statewide to be honored at the Association of Business and Industry (ABI) Legends in Manufacturing event in October.
