MCC Honors Reception recognizes outstanding students

Several Marshalltown Community College students were recognized for their 2016-17 achievements during the annual Honors & Recognition Reception on Wednesday, April 26. The MCC Student Senate sponsored the event, during which faculty and staff spoke about the successes of their students, shared stories, and presented each honoree with a certificate.
Student athletes, resident assistants, student ambassadors, peer tutors and peer leaders were all honored on Thursday night. Members of the Student Senate, Student Activities Council (SAC), Collegiate Veteran Association (CVA), Forever Representing Our God (FROG), Multicultural Club, Ecology Club, IT Club, and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) were also recognized.
MCC professors in the subjects of Accounting, Agriculture, Art, Biology, Broadcasting, Business, Computer Networking, Marketing, and Sociology each chose an ‘Outstanding Student’ to represent the respective department. Each MCC Outstanding Student had his/her own story of excellence in academics. Outstanding Student Awards were presented as follows:
- Accounting (presented by Ted Lewis): Paige Taylor of Coquitlam, Canada.
- Agriculture (presented by Sally Wilson): Andrew Gartin of Gilman.
- Art (presented by Tim Castle): Emma Lang of Grinnell.
- Biology (presented by Dr. Danielle Kness): Hannah Stone of Marshalltown.
- Broadcasting (presented by Steve Muntz): Joshua Benda of Toledo.
- Business (presented by George Johnson): Rafael Miguel Santos Leite Pereira of Amadora, Portugal; and Artur Aguiar de Albuquerque of Fortaleza, Brazil.
- Computer Networking (presented by Brenda Heitmeyer): Sirleaf Wiah of Brooklyn Park, MN; and Victor Sanchez Garcia of Tama.
- Marketing (presented by George Johnson): Steven Adelmund of Marshalltown.
- Sociology (presented by Marie Sheneman): Kim Dawson of Marshalltown.
All-Iowa Academic Team members Hannah Stone and Barbara Araoz were also recognized.
