Financial Literacy Fair is Oct. 25

The Iowa Valley Intermediary Program and Marshalltown Community College’s Admissions Office are hosting a Financial Literacy Fair for area high school students on Oct. 25. More than 200 students enrolled in Financial Literacy, Personal Finance and Career Exploration courses are expected to participate.
The high school students will arrive in two shifts, one for morning workshops and lunch, and the other for lunch and afternoon workshops. Prior to the Fair, the students will choose a career path and calculate their expected monthly income and necessary education/training, then complete a budget sheet. During the Fair, they’ll visit various booths and make decisions on housing, clothing, food, utilities, transportation and other life expenses based on their budgets.
“It’s our hope that the high school students will learn to make wise decisions about future expenses based on their actual and anticipated future incomes,” says Terri Hungerford, Intermediary Network Coordinator and event organizer. “Once budget sheets are completed, the participants will meet with financial advisors to get tips on how they could have made different and/or better spending choices at the booths. Students will also attend a panel discussion led by Amber Bolen, MCC Student Finance Advisor; a local financial advisor; and a current college student on how to be financially savvy.”
