MCC & IVG students named to 2016 All-Iowa Academic Team

McHenry earns “Silver Scholar” award
Marshalltown Community College (MCC) students, Kathleen McHenry and Terry Grimes, and Iowa Valley Grinnell (IVG) students, Gunnar Bucklin and Michael Renteria Sanchez, were honored as members of the “2016 All-Iowa Community College Academic Team” at a banquet on March 2 in Des Moines. Students are nominated each year by a Phi Theta Kappa chapter at the community college level.
Kathleen McHenry received special recognition when she was honored as a “Silver Scholar” on the Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team*. Each Silver Scholar receives a $1,250 scholarship and a special medallion. Phi Theta Kappa will recognize the 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Scholars on stage at this year’s Annual Convention, April 7-9, in National Harbor, MD.

MCC:
Kathleen McHenry graduated from MCC in December, and is now studying Sociology at the University of Iowa. She was a Loyal S. and Helen Fairall Memorial Scholarship recipient, Student Senate member, President of GLBTQ Alliance, and Student Ambassador.
Terry Grimes is studying Computer Network Management at MCC and plans to transfer to the University of Northern Iowa after graduating in May. Grimes is actively involved in the Collegiate Veterans Association (CVA) on campus. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, from 1990-2013.

IVG:
Gunnar Bucklin is a sophomore from Newton, IA studying Psychology. He plans to transfer to the University of Iowa or the University of Northern Iowa after graduating. Michael Renteria Sanchez earned his AAS degree from Iowa Valley Grinnell, but is back taking additional courses for pre-engineering. He was named Outstanding Automotive Student in 2015, and plans to transfer to the University of Northern Iowa in the future.
The honorees were accompanied to the recognition banquet by Dr. Robin Lilienthal, MCC Provost; Dr. Chris Russell, MCC Dean of Students & Academic Affairs; MaryAnne Nickle, Dean of Iowa Valley Grinnell; Barbara Hall, IVG PTK advisor; Dr. Chris Duree, IVCCD Chancellor; IVCCD Board of Director members Deborah Crosser, Deb Jones and Delbert Kellogg; and MCC PTK advisors Pele Waddilove and PJ Colbert.
*Community college presidents or their designated nominators may submit no more than two nominations per campus for this award. An independent panel of judges considers outstanding academic rigor, grade point average, academic and leadership awards, and engagement in college and community service in the selection process.
