IVG Phi Theta Kappa inducts new members

Gunnar Bucklin, Skyler Small, Amber Hall, Cynthia Strobel, Terry Burnell, and Aliya Pargeon, were each inducted into the Beta Sigma Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa on Nov. 5, at Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell.

Brenda Kremer welcomed guests and conducted the ceremony. The keynote speaker was Barbara Baker, Director of Advertising and Community Relations at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance. Baker congratulated the inductees and encouraged the students to continue to learn and grow. “Your education will provide you with opportunities you could’ve never imagined,” says Baker. Baker urged the students to never give up, and challenged them to take advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead.

MaryAnne Nickle, Dean of Iowa Valley Grinnell, administered the oath of membership. Current Beta Sigma Chi members James Havel and Lisa Hollopeter, welcomed the new inductees. Southeast CC student, Travis Fincher, also congratulated the inductees and shared his own personal experience with Phi Theta Kappa. Fincher is the Vice President for the Iowa Region of PTK.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,275 chapters on college campuses. More than 2.5 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918. Phi Theta Kappa is recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges as the official honor society of two-year colleges.
