MCC Commencement is Friday, May 5

The public is invited to attend the 89th annual commencement ceremony at Marshalltown Community College on Friday, May 5, at 7 pm, in the MCC Student Activity Center. The MCC Class of 2017 includes 387 graduate applicants; this includes fall 2016 graduates and spring and summer 2017 applicants.

The commencement program includes the Presentation of Colors by the Central Iowa Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and the National Anthem performed by a group from The Heart of Iowa Sweet Adelines. MCC Provost Dr. Robin Shaffer Lilienthal will welcome guests, and Student Senate President Adiu Arou will introduce the commencement speaker, MCC Alum Dr. Kyle Burgason, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice Studies at Iowa State University in Ames. Dr. Burgason earned an Associate of Applied Science in Construction Technology from Marshalltown Community College in 2003 and an Associate of Science in Criminal Justice in 2006. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees as a magna cum laude graduate of East Tennessee State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Before being hired at ISU in 2015, he was a faculty member at Western Carolina University.

Dr. Patrick Kennedy, Dean of Academic Affairs, and MaryAnne Nickle, Dean of Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell, will present Student Awards and Academic Honors. Honorary MCC Degrees will be presented by Bobby Elam, MCC Faculty Senate President.

A reception honoring the graduates will be held outside of the Student Activity Center immediately following the commencement ceremony. The Ray Frederick Gallery, Room 306, will be open for viewing the current MCC Student Photography exhibit.

The MCC Student Activity Center is located on the south side of campus at 3700 S. Center St. in Marshalltown.
